Understanding GVWR and Payload
What the weight numbers on a trailer mean and why they matter.
GVWR
Gross Vehicle Weight Rating is the most the trailer can weigh with its load. It is set by the axles, tires, frame and coupler.
Empty weight
This is what the trailer weighs on its own.
Payload
Payload = GVWR minus empty weight. That is how much cargo you can safely carry.
Why it matters
Overloading wears out tires, bearings and brakes, and can make the trailer unsafe on the road. Always buy a trailer with payload to spare.
