Do I Need Brakes on My Trailer?

Short answer
Most trailers built to carry heavier loads come with brakes. Many states require brakes once a trailer is over a certain weight, so check your state's rules.
Electric vs. hydraulic surge brakes
- Electric brakes are the most common. They need a brake controller in your truck.
- Surge brakes work on their own when the trailer pushes against the hitch. Common on boat trailers.
